The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, arrived in Moscow on Tuesday as part of an official working visit where he will hold meetings with Russian authorities and international leaders. Additionally, he will participate in commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II. Accompanied by the First Lady and deputy, Cilia Flores, the Venezuelan head of state was received in the Russian capital within the framework of a day that aims to strengthen political and diplomatic dialogue between Caracas and Moscow.
Maduro is expected to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, at the Kremlin. The Venezuelan leader will take part in official events honoring the sacrifice and bravery of the Soviet people in World War II, highlighting their decisive role in the defeat of fascism and the liberation of Europe.
Maduro's presence at this celebration reaffirms the ties of cooperation and solidarity between Venezuela and Russia, as well as the South American country's commitment to historical memory and the defense of the principle of self-determination of peoples. The official program also includes meetings in broad and reduced formats, according to Russian spokespersons, and participation from other international leaders, such as Presidents Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil.
This meeting with Putin will be the second in less than a year. In October 2024, both leaders met in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, where they discussed topics of mutual interest in strategic areas. Venezuela and Russia maintain a long-standing bilateral relationship, grounded in agreements on energy, technological, military, educational, and commercial cooperation. Furthermore, deepening the joint partnership is expected during this visit.
