Businessman Steve Witkoff, from the Middle East, arrived in Moscow after departing from Qatar and flying over the airspace of Ukraine and Belarus. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has an international phone call scheduled, although it was not revealed if it would be with the U.S. President Donald Trump himself. Peskov indicated that Russia would not formulate its position on the proposed truce until receiving details from the United States.
"We are on the ten-yard line and the president (Trump) expects the Russians to help us bring this to the end zone," said Karoline Leavitt, White House spokesperson. So far, Russia has not issued comments on the truce proposal, although last week Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed it and rejected the possible presence of European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine.
The Kremlin announced a meeting between Russian representatives and special envoys from U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the truce accepted by Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned that there are planned contacts regarding the truce proposal and did not rule out other meetings for President Putin.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova added that the meeting could take place that very Thursday. On a flight to Moscow was a Gulfstream G650ER carrying the U.S. special envoy. The possibility of a meeting between representatives of Russia and the United States seeking solutions to the current situation presents itself as a significant step toward peace in the region.
