The governments of Russia and Ukraine completed an exchange of 300 prisoners of war in an operation facilitated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The released Russian soldiers are receiving medical care in Belarus and will soon return to Moscow, according to official information. For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that 150 soldiers from his country have returned home from Russia as part of this exchange.
In his statements, Zelensky thanked the United Arab Emirates for its role in the mediation that facilitated this prisoner exchange, which took place nearly three years after the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine began.
"This exchange is an important step toward restoring peace in the region and represents a significant gesture of goodwill between our nations," emphasized Zelensky.
The process of releasing prisoners of war has been celebrated by both sides as a positive advancement in bilateral relations between Russia and Ukraine, although tensions persist in other aspects of the territorial dispute.
