A diplomat from Russia stated on Thursday that the country may need to expand and update its nuclear arsenal.
"We all understand that in conditions of increasing competition and the singular nature of restrictions on the development of ballistic missiles and other types of weapons, it is possible that we will have to expand and update our nuclear doctrine," he noted.
This commentary came in connection with the discussion about the influence of the demilitarization of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on global stability, which, according to him, could lead to an arms race.
"We hope that our partners in the world will also provide unconditional guarantees that new types of weapons will not pose a threat to them and that there will not be an arms race without limits in the world," the diplomat added.
According to him, in this situation, Russia is forced to focus on potential threats and adapt.
