Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented during his daily press conference that Russia sees nothing new in the recent statements from the new president of the United States. However, Peskov stated that Moscow is paying attention to all rhetoric coming from Washington to study the details.
According to Peskov, President Putin is willing to engage in equal dialogue with his American counterpart, despite the indication that Trump was the one who most employed sanctioning methods during his first term.
Although Trump has threatened to impose high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russia if the war in Ukraine does not end, he has also expressed his appreciation for Russians and his good relationship with Putin. However, Trump did not specify which countries could be sanctioned if an agreement is not reached.
Russia has been one of the countries that has supported Russia with shipments of military material or diplomatic backing in international organizations. Despite the threat of tariffs, trade between the United States and Russia has been limited, especially since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
According to official data, trade in goods and services between the two countries reached an estimated total of $20.2 billion in 2022. The United States has suspended imports of oil, steel, and iron from Russia, although it continues to import uranium and fertilizers.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the United States has imposed several sanctions on Russia, including restrictions in the oil sector and on major Russian banks, with the aim of isolating Moscow from the international financial system based on the dollar.
