The presidential spokesperson of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, warned of a new escalation of tension in the conflict in Ukraine following the supposed authorization given by U.S. President Joe Biden for Kiev to attack Russian territory with ATACMS missiles. Peskov recalled the repercussions previously anticipated by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding this situation.
"And perhaps, first and foremost, we will take this as a starting point," Peskov stated, mentioning that Putin had already warned about the implications of such a decision for Russia. The spokesperson emphasized that Russia's position had been clearly expressed in previous statements and pointed out that the outgoing administration in Washington seems to be fueling the tension surrounding the conflict.
In a past statement, Putin had warned that allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory with long-range Western weapons would mean that NATO countries would be at war with Russia. Peskov noted that the information regarding the alleged authorization for Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles on Russian soil represents a direct implication of Washington in the conflict.
In this context, Peskov underscored Russia's firm position and the concern about the escalation of tension that could arise from these actions. The Kremlin considers that such a move could elevate the situation to a new level of confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, with potential regional and international repercussions.
