Russia Open to Dialogue with US Under Trump

Russia expresses willingness to engage in dialogue with the new US administration under President-elect Trump, highlighting the absence of contact during Biden's term. Ambassador Gennady Gatilov emphasizes openness to negotiations if based on realistic grounds.

Russia Open to Dialogue with US Under Trump

Russia is willing to open a dialogue with the new Administration of the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, according to the Russian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov. During Joe Biden's term, this contact "was lacking," Gatilov pointed out, but added that Moscow "does not have illusions" about the upcoming U.S. executive and a possible radical change in policy toward Russia.

"Trump promised to resolve the war with Ukraine in 24 hours, which will not be possible, but if he suggests something to start a political process, it will be welcome," Gatilov stated. He added that if there is a willingness for real negotiations based on reality, Russia is open to dialogue without the need for mediators, even directly with Ukraine.

Regarding Russia's expectations from the Trump Administration concerning international organizations, Gatilov mentioned the hope for a change in attitude toward the UN and its humanitarian agencies. During his first term, the United States initiated processes to withdraw from UNESCO and the World Health Organization, and ceased its participation in the Human Rights Council, in addition to cutting its contributions to these entities, actions that were reversed by the Biden administration.

"We hope that the U.S. position will change, as its previous behavior was negative," the Russian diplomat noted. Despite international sanctions and legislation adopted against Russia during Trump's first term, Gatilov reiterated Russia's willingness to cooperate based on its national interest.
