The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, has called for a clear increase in economic pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. In an interview with the German ARD channel, Kallas stated: "We must do something about the shadow fleet, as it is a tool that Russia uses to extract and distribute oil." She pointed out that Russia obtains revenues in this way to finance the war. Kallas added: "We must be creative, we must sit down with our partners and talk to them, because if the UK, the US, Europe, and the G7 partners issue the same sanctions, it will have a major impact." She emphasized that the focus is now on exerting more pressure on Russia until it ends this war, confirming that "the Russian economy is not doing well." The term "Russian shadow fleet" refers to oil tankers and cargo ships that Russia uses to evade sanctions, for example, in oil transport. The EU has long warned that shadow fleet vessels could also be used as platforms for launching drones to carry out jamming or espionage attacks.
