Russia Aims to Enhance Relations with Syria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced Russia's intention to strengthen relations with Syria, including issues related to the Russian military presence in the territory which is currently under discussion. Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian MFA, noted: "We are committed to the constant and active development of Russian-Syrian bilateral relations in various areas." It is emphasized that at this moment consultations are being held with the Syrian side to determine the prospects and areas of bilateral cooperation. The issue of the Russian military presence in Syria with the new Syrian leadership is also being discussed.

Vladimir Putin and the President of Syria, Ahmed Shaar, exchanged views on the situation in Syria during a telephone conversation that took place last Wednesday, the first after Shaar took office. The President of Russia confirmed his support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria, as well as his willingness to review agreements concluded with previous governments. In turn, Shaar emphasized the strategic relations between the two countries and Syria's readiness to interact with all parties in the interests of the Syrian people, as well as to strengthen security and stability in the country.
