Peskov praises Cuban coast guard actions

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov praised the Cuban coast guards for neutralizing an armed boat. He stated that the detainees admitted to attempting a terrorist infiltration.


Moscow, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) – The Russian presidential spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, praised today the work of the Cuban coast guards in neutralizing a fast boat flying the US flag with armed men on board, which incursioned into Cuban waters. "Nothing to comment here, considering that the detainees, Cubans who, with weapons in hand, tried to sneak onto the island, admitted that their intention was to infiltrate for terrorist purposes, according to the Havana communiqué," the Kremlin spokesman told the press. In this regard, he specified that given the events, "the Cuban border guards did what they had to do in that situation," he insisted. In this context, Peskov emphasized that it is significant to maintain moderation and avoid provocative actions towards the Caribbean nation. "Regarding security around the island, it is very important that everyone maintain moderation and not allow any kind of provocative action," Peskov noted, alluding to the attempts orchestrated from the United States to destabilize the Cuban people and government. Faced with this scenario, the head of the press service of the presidency of the Eurasian giant acknowledged that the situation around Cuba "is worsening." Previously, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, assured that the incident with the boat was provoked by Washington to aggravate tensions. "This is an aggressive provocation by the United States, whose purpose is to escalate the situation and detonate the conflict," emphasized the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Eurasian giant. The day before, Cuba's Ministry of the Interior reported that a vessel flying the US flag entered Cuban waters and opened fire. Cuban coast guards responded to the fire, killing four people on board the vessel, in which six others were wounded. According to the Interior Ministry, the 10 people are Cubans residing in North American territory; while it assured that the six wounded have already been identified, as well as one of the deceased men. The body confirmed that the detainees admitted during preliminary interrogations their intention to infiltrate the Caribbean island for terrorist purposes.
